When you stay at the Hilo Bay Hale (House) you will not need to rent a car because everything Hilo has to offer is an easy walk away, including all the eclectic cafes, galleries and museums that make Hilo so famous. The second largest town in Hawaii, Hilo is a great starting and/or ending point for your Big Island Experience as Hilo International Airport is just a few minutes away.
Relax and enjoy watching the cruise ships and Hawaiian paddlers pass in and out of the Hilo Harbor from the huge wrap around front lanai (porch) on this classic 1912 plantation home that has survived tsunamis and earthquakes. In 2007, the house was purchased by your hosts, Danny Miller and Dawn Roberts and saved from demoltion. Danny and Dawn had a vision of creating an “Oasis” in the city where visitors to Hilo could rest during their adventures to the islands. Today, visitors from around the world, including research scientists, and archeaologists enjoy the relaxing sounds of the water gardens that surround the house.
Restoration of the house was completed in December of 2008 and offers a glimpse back into Hilo’s exciting history. Architectural features, including ten foot ceilings and original hardwood floors have been restored and complimented with unique bamboo trim, wall treatments and ceilings.
